and this forest will be a desert will be included in the 2nd Annual Catskill Film & Video Festival, part of the Masters on Main Street project in Catskill, NY.

The festival will showcase 32 pieces, predominantly shorts, by 34 artists, filmmakers, and collaborative teams from across the country. A mix of video and film, this diverse grouping includes work by seasoned filmmakers as well as young artists setting the tone in contemporary video work. In addition to traditional categories such as documentary and animation, the festival will also explore the relationship between film and video work and highlight the connection between performance and video. Video interviews and live Q&As will help provide insight into the artistic process.

Curated by Jacqueline Weaver, the festival includes work by Mikel Bisbee Durlam + Jody C. A little update with more information about the Summer of Video Art show C + A Projects is participating in this August at Krowswork in Oakland:

Krowswork presents a two month video art extravaganza featuring a rotating exhibition of video art projections, installations, and performances, as well as lectures, special screenings, and artist-led events.

The first wave begins with The Shape of the Wave on First Friday, July 1st (through July 23rd), schedule and participating artists here.

Carolyn and I finished two new video pieces this week:

The first, and this forest will be a desert, is a meditation on fear & beauty featuring the music of Nordic-roots band Wardruna. A stop-motion landscape of fire and ice made up of waste-plastics inhabited by a plastic-toy polar bear.

Red White was made in the tradition of our earlier piece, Smoking; viewing mundane domestic ritual in the manner of a landscape. Red White is about fate, or rather the fates winding yarns. More information on both of these pieces can be found here.

We're awaiting confirmation on a screening in Southern California in the next few weeks. Watch this space!

Here's that man again!
I'm excited to be starting work again on the second staging of Seth Eisen's show, Blackbird. I'll be creating all new video elements for this redux of the performance which features Seth incarnating the likes of Jean Malin, Danny Kaye, Issan Dorsey, Ney Matogroso, Sylvester, Klaus Nomi and the fabulous Aziz. (My post about the last staging can be found here, and the subsequent reviews are here.)

The show runs June 24 - July 10 as part of the National Queer Arts Festival, 2010 at Mama Calizo's Voice Factory in San Francisco. Tickets are available via Brown Paper Tickets.

Rubin Starset and I challenged each other to a photo competition, spurred off by an SFZero task. We had a total of five items to shoot, plus we gave the other 3 extra special challenges, for a total of eight photos each. After a week we got together and reviewed what we shot.

At first we thought it would be fun to throw the photos online and see if our friends could guess who's were who's, but quickly agreed that would be too easy. What we decided on was just to ask friends to vote on their top picks with no labeling on which photos were who's. So here we are, ready to ask you to take a look and select which ones you fancy the most. In the end we'll post the results if we feel like it, and most likely throw the photos online with more information.

I do the Lab's post-postcard show every year- and I can't believe it's already time again! The gallery is lined with little boxes of small format multiples which can be anything from sculpture to photos to wearables- anything that fits in the box, really. It's a wacky, fun marketplace sort of show where you can find all sorts of unique little pieces. Oh, and nothing is over $30! This year Carolyn Radlo and I are offering individual Conversations postcards that we launched at my Open Studio in October.

Blackbird: A Queer Vocal History

I'm excited to be producing the video elements of Seth Eisen's new project, Blackbird: A Queer Vocal History.

The show weaves puppetry, movement, music and video to introduce key queer performers who's performance and song broke social and cultural boundaries but who have remained largely forgotten by the culture at large. Featured in the performance are stories from the lives of Jean Malin in the Panzy Crazed speakeasies of 1920's New York and Danny Kaye, Issan Dorsey, Ney Matogroso, Sylvester, Klaus Nomi finally ending up with the outrageously gender bending Bulgarian pop star Azis.

"Though their stories and cultures may differ greatly, all these characters have in common a unique approach that helped redefine what it means to be out, queer and vocal."

Here it is already- this weekend I will have my little studio open to the public as a part of San Francisco Open Studios 2008. You can find me on Clayton St. at the intersection with Carl St., just up the hill from the N-Judah streetcar stop at Carl & Cole. I'll have the doors open 10am to 6pm both days.

"Servo" wins Best Direction
